B. Chrysenteron has a grayish brown to blackish brown cap; the surface cracks to expose the pale flesh, and often there are pinkish to reddish tints toward the cap edge in age. The tubes are yellow, the pores yellow with an irregular outline. The stipe is somewhat variable in color, often with yellow at the apex, but reddish and pallid colors occur elsewhere, and sometimes only the conspicuous longitudinal striations are reddish in color. One or more ares of the fruitbody turn bluish when cut or handled.
